Martin Luther was born on November 10, 1483 in Eisleben, Germany. His parents, Hans and Margarrete Luther, were peasants. His father wanted him to become a lawyer so he was entered in school at age seven. In 1501, Martin Luther entered the University of Erfurt, where he received a Master of Arts degree. One day, while being caught in a thunderstorm, Luther vowed to St. Anne that he would become a monk if his life was spared. He said “Help, St. Anne! I’ll become a monk!” After becoming a monk, he enrolled in the University of Wittenberg. He excelled in his studies and received a doctorate, becoming a Professor of Theology there.
Martin Luther had a few major influences in his life. One of them including the time he vowed to St. Anne that he would become a monk. Another influence was when he traveled to Rome in 1510 and was horrified when he witnessed the sale of indulgences. He thought this was wrong and that everyone should have a direct connection to god. Money shouldn’t be involved with spiritual matters.
Obstacles that Luther faced was entering a monastery and becoming a monk. It was very difficult because he didn’t find the religious enlightenment he was seeking. Another obstacle would be the Catholic Church being against what Luther thought was right. The only way he would be able to change the ways of the church, is if he had followers to support him. His followers were called Lutherans.
Martin Luther had many accomplishments during his time. An accomplishment with an immediate effect would be when he started the Protestant Reformation. This occurred in 1517 when he posted the 95 Theses on Castle Church door. He had done this to show that the Catholic Church was Corrupt. As a result some of his followers broke off from the Catholic Church and started the Lutheran Church. This new church helped revive the Christian religion and faith. An accomplishment with a long-term effect would be that because of Martin Luther’s actions, the Christian religion was fixed and the Lutheran religion was created.
The Protestant Reformation happened during the time of the Renaissance. The Renaissance lasted through the 14th and 16th century. During this period many historical events happened. Michelangelo was a famous Italian artist who in 1514, painted the Sistine Chapel in Rome. In the year 1517 of the Renaissance, Martin Luther posted the 95 Theses. Machiavelli was a famous writer during this time, he wrote The Prince in 1532. Henry VIII was king of England during this time. He wanted a divorce from his wife Catherine of Aragon but that was not tolerated in the Catholic Church. In 1533 Henry VIII married Anne Boleyn and became excommunicated.
Overall, Martin Luther was a great man of the Renaissance who changed the corrupt Catholic Church. Without him, things would probably be different in the world. We probably wouldn’t be much modernized. Even the Renaissance helped people move more into modern times, without out that period in time we could still be living like them.
